Pin@y Educational Partnerships
Established in 2001, PEP is a Fiipina/o American Studies curriculum and teaching pipeline. PEP is currently a service-learning program of SFSU's Asian American Studies Department in the College of Ethnic Studies. PEP partners with San Francisco public schools and the Filipino Community Center located in the Excelsior neighborhood which has the highest concentration of Filipina/o youth. Our main partnerships are between San Francisco State upper division undergraduates and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in the field of education and community college, high school, middle school, and elementary school students primarily from low-income backgrounds.
One of the main objectives for the PEP Program is to reach out to the students who are underperforming their potential. PEP practices teaching philosophies that include epistemological pedagogy, visual arts/media literacy, barangay/bayanihan/community building pedagogy, critical performance pedagogy, social justice education, dialogical/interactive pedagogy, service learning and learning service, counterstorytelling, critical race pedagogy, and decolonizing pedagogy. PEP practices these pedagogies by implementing an engaging and critical cultural curriculum that focuses on Filipina/o American studies (including introducing the students to Filipina/o literature, dancing and the arts), one-on-one mentoring, college counseling, and leadership/self-determination training. PEP as a community service-learning program also provides training for college students who are interested in teaching and research.
Through community service projects, youth campaigns, and community based research, PEP aims to provide opportunities for college, high school, middle school, and elementary school students to teach and learn from each other about the experiences of Filipinas/os while also addressing and organizing around community issues. Through PEP "Critical FACTS" (Critical Filipina/o American Curriculum Training Space), PEP provides training in critical pedagogy and critical Filipina/o American studies. Through educational research projects, PEP studies the psychosocial ecology and experiences of Filipina/o American students. Through all of their actions, PEP's mission is to promote learning, teaching, and research as practices of freedom.
PEP currently has 36 teacher apprentices and over 120 students. PEP is located at the following school sites:
