Forum 2004 Program

CCI’s second annual Forum, co-sponsored by the SFSU Marian Wright Edelman Institute for the Study of Children, Youth and Families, was held on Friday April 23, 2004, on the SFSU campus. Unlike the previous year’s public forum, this year’s conference was by invitation — so as to foster a more intensive, interactive, and outcome-oriented work session.

During the course of the day, we were able to look deeply at health disparities in the broadest sense, ranging from physical and mental health to issues of violence, and providing action and outcome-oriented solutions to impact research, services, programs and policies.

Forum Goals:

Discuss, in light of the latest research findings, the relationship between social oppression and the health and well-being of adolescents in disenfranchised communities;

Support innovative, socially engaged, and action-oriented research at SFSU by strengthening relationships among SFSU faculty, community providers and funders to address health disparities among ethnic minority youth; and

Promote increased connection and interactions between academic research and the practice of community empowerment within the field of adolescent health.

A varied format provided an opportunity for large and small group interaction, and promoted reflection, dialogue, networking and relationship-building between faculty, community providers and funders.
